Country Drives and New Construction

Asphalt paving in Stokesdale serves a town that sits at the corner where Guilford, Rockingham, Forsyth and Stokes counties meet. Most of the town is in Guilford, with small pieces in the other three. It was incorporated in 1907, but most of its growth has been recent: the population rose from 2,134 in 1990 to 5,924 in 2020, and housing units jumped from 1,268 in 2010 to 2,244 in 2020. That mix means long country drives next to brand-new subdivision driveways.

New homes, new driveways

A builder's driveway is often the thinnest acceptable section, laid on a base that was rushed to meet a closing date. Those driveways look fine for a few years and then show cracks at the garage, the apron and wherever a heavy truck parked during construction. If your new home's driveway is cracking early, we check the base thickness at a few points before recommending a fix. Sometimes the right answer is targeted repair and sealing; sometimes it is an overlay with better edges.

Long rural drives

For older homesteads and newer homes on acreage, the driveway may run hundreds of feet from a state road. We price new hot-mix, compacted asphalt millings and improved gravel side by side. On long drives, drainage matters more than surface type: ditches, culverts and regular high points to shed water keep any surface from washing out.

Belews Lake and the northwest

Belews Lake lies just to the northwest. Homes on the rolling land toward the lake often have sloped driveways where runoff cuts along the edge. Stabilizing the edge and turning water off the surface are the first things we look at there.

Roads and connections

US 158 crosses NC 68 and NC 65 near the town center. Those are state roads, as are many of the rural roads around them, and NCDOT regulates driveway connections to them. When a driveway is new or changing, NCDOT's process comes first. NCDOT will install a drainage pipe under a residential connection if the owner supplies it.

County stormwater

Guilford County's stormwater section names Stokesdale as one of the towns it serves for stormwater and floodplain questions. If you are adding a large paved area, a shop pad or a second drive, we check with the county about any review before the work is planned.

What we do in Stokesdale

  • New asphalt driveways for new homes
  • Repairs and overlays on early-failing builder driveways
  • Gravel-to-asphalt conversions and millings drives
  • Crack sealing and sealcoating
  • Small commercial and church lots

Sloped lots toward the lake

The land between town and Belews Lake rolls, and some newer homes sit well below or above the road. A driveway that climbs steeply from the road needs a firm, well-compacted surface and a place for water to go before it reaches the street. One that drops down to the house needs a plan to keep runoff out of the garage. Both are easier to solve during paving than afterward.

Stokesdale Questions

My new-build driveway is already cracking. Is that normal?

Some hairline cracking is common, but cracks at the garage or apron within a few years often point to a thin base. We check before recommending repairs or an overlay.

Can you pave just part of a long driveway?

Yes. Paving the apron and the area near the house while using millings or gravel for the rest is a common choice.

Do you need county approval for a new parking pad?

Small residential pads usually do not, but large new paved areas may. We check with Guilford County when the project is large.

My driveway slopes down to the garage. Can you stop water from running in?

Usually. A trench drain, a slight hump at the top or a swale to one side can be built in when we repave.
