Rolling Farmland and Busy Corridors

Asphalt paving in McLeansville covers a community that is part country and part suburb. The census-designated place lies about nine miles east of downtown Greensboro, just north of US 70 (Burlington Road), and the land to the north is rolling farmland, woods and suburban homes. The 2020 census counted 1,113 residents in the CDP itself, but the wider McLeansville area along the 27301 ZIP code includes many more homes on larger lots.

Long drives and wooded lots

Many McLeansville homes sit back from the road among trees. Long driveways through wooded lots have particular problems: roots heave the edges, shade keeps the surface damp, and leaves and pine straw clog the edges and hold moisture against the asphalt. When we rebuild a wooded drive, we cut back the edge where roots have lifted it, add stone, and leave a clean shoulder so water can drain off.

Creeks and drainage

South Buffalo Creek forms the western edge of the CDP and flows north to Buffalo Creek, part of the Reedy Fork Creek, Haw River and Cape Fear River system. Lots near those creeks and their small tributaries tend to be lower and wetter, and the clay under them stays soft longer after rain. Driveways there need a thicker base and a clear path for water to leave the surface.

Truck traffic on the corridor

The US 70 corridor has changed in recent years. A Publix distribution center along US 70 was finished in 2022 at an estimated cost of about $300 million, and Interstate 785 runs through the western part of the area. For businesses and churches on the corridor, heavier delivery traffic means entrance aprons and drive lanes take more punishment than the parking stalls. We often recommend a thicker section or full-depth repair at entrances and an overlay elsewhere.

State roads

US 70 and most rural roads here are state-maintained, and NCDOT regulates driveway connections to them. NCDOT also installs drainage pipes under residential driveways when the owner supplies the pipe, according to the UNC School of Government. If your driveway crosses a roadside ditch, the culvert size and condition are part of our estimate.

Unincorporated area

McLeansville is not an incorporated town, so Guilford County handles planning and stormwater for unincorporated property. For larger paving projects, such as a new shop pad or a church lot expansion, we check with the county before the work is planned.

What we handle

  • Long and wooded driveways
  • Gravel-to-asphalt conversions
  • Root and edge repairs
  • Entrance and lot repairs for corridor businesses
  • Crack sealing and sealcoating

Gravel drives that wash out

Many McLeansville drives are gravel, and on any slope a hard summer storm can move stone into the road and leave ruts. Converting to asphalt or compacted millings fixes the washout problem, but only if water is directed off the surface. We set a crown and, where needed, add a turnout so water leaves the drive before it gathers speed.

McLeansville Questions

Tree roots are lifting my driveway edge. Can that be fixed?

Yes. We cut out the lifted section, deal with the roots where it is safe for the tree, rebuild the base and repave the edge.

Is McLeansville covered by the City of Greensboro permit?

Not unincorporated McLeansville. Most roads there are state-maintained, so NCDOT handles driveway connections, and Guilford County handles stormwater.

Do you work on church and business lots on US 70?

Yes, including entrance repairs, overlays, sealcoating and striping.

Will paving stop my gravel driveway from washing out?

Yes, if the drive is graded to shed water. We add a crown and turnouts where needed.
