Small Town, Busy Highway

Asphalt paving in Sedalia serves a small town with a lot of through traffic. US 70 (Burlington Road) runs through the center of town, 11 miles from Greensboro to the west and 11 miles from Burlington to the east, and Interstate 40 passes just to the south with an exit at Rock Creek Dairy Road. The 2020 census counted 676 residents. Most of the paving work here is driveways, church lots and small commercial properties that meet a busy road.

Driveways on a highway

When a driveway opens onto a road like US 70, the apron takes a beating from turning cars and the occasional truck pulling in. Water from the road shoulder also runs onto it. A sturdy apron with a solid base and a clean edge where it meets the highway makes the whole driveway last longer. Because US 70 is a state road, NCDOT regulates the connection. Its published application describes a $50 construction inspection fee, refunded if the application is denied, and states that the portion in the right-of-way becomes NCDOT property.

Historic Sedalia

Sedalia is home to the Palmer Memorial Institute Historic District, now the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum, the site of a preparatory school that ran from 1902 to 1971. The Dr. Joseph A. McLean House is also on the National Register. For the churches and older homes in town, we keep paving simple and in keeping with the property.

Rural lots

Outside the small town center, homes sit on larger lots with longer drives. We pave, convert from gravel or use compacted millings depending on length and budget. Drainage ditches along the road need a properly sized culvert under the drive so water passes without overtopping the apron.

Church and community lots

Church lots in and around Sedalia get heavy use on a few days a week and light use the rest. That makes them good candidates for weekday work. Typical needs are pothole and edge repair, crack sealing, a sealcoat and fresh striping, including accessible spaces laid out to the 2010 ADA Standards.

County services

Sedalia is one of the towns Guilford County serves directly for stormwater and floodplain questions. For a large new paved area, we check the county's requirements first.

What we do in Sedalia

  • Driveway paving and apron rebuilds
  • Gravel and millings drives
  • Culvert-crossing driveways
  • Church lot repair, sealing and striping

Keeping water off the apron

US 70 has shoulders and ditches that carry a lot of water in heavy rain. Where a driveway crosses the ditch, a pipe that is too small or half full of sediment backs water up onto the apron, and that is where potholes start. We check the pipe and the ditch at the estimate and, on a state road, coordinate any pipe work with NCDOT.

Sedalia Questions

My driveway opens onto US 70. Who approves changes?

NCDOT regulates connections to state roads like US 70. We tell you at the estimate whether your project needs its approval.

Can you rebuild just the apron?

Yes. Apron rebuilds are common on driveways that meet busy roads.

Do you work on church lots during the week?

Yes. Weekday scheduling keeps church lots open for services.

Why does my driveway apron keep washing out?

Often the pipe under it is too small or clogged, so water overtops the apron. We check the culvert as part of the estimate.
