Driveways From Jamestown's Building Boom
Asphalt paving in Jamestown is mostly about driveways on neighborhoods built in one push. The town grew quickly in the 1960s, when several residential neighborhoods were laid out on former farmland, and the population went from 748 in 1950 to 1,247 in 1960 and 2,148 by 1980. Plenty of those homes still have their original driveways, or driveways that have been overlaid once or twice. Sixty years of Piedmont winters is a long time for any pavement.
Rebuild or overlay?
On a 1960s driveway, the first question is what is underneath. Many were built with less base stone than we would use today, and some have settled where the original farmland was graded and filled. If the surface has a web of small cracks, low spots that hold water or edges breaking off, the base has likely failed and an overlay will crack again in the same places. If the surface is just dry and gray with a few long cracks, sealing and crack filling or a thin overlay may be enough. We probe and show you what we find.
A town that stays put
Jamestown's 2020 census showed a median age of 50.1, with a quarter of residents 65 or older. Many owners have lived in their homes for decades and want a driveway that will outlast the next few winters without constant patching. That usually points to spending a bit more on base work now. For owners who plan to sell soon, a clean overlay or sealcoat may be the better value, and we will tell you which we think fits.
Deep River and drainage
The Deep River, a tributary of the Cape Fear, runs through the southern part of town, and the land slopes toward it. Driveways on the lower side of a street often collect runoff from above. We check where water goes in a heavy rain and grade the base so it moves off the surface and away from the garage.
Roads in and out
Jamestown Parkway runs south of downtown and links to I-74 and I-73, while Wendover Avenue (US 70) runs along the north edge. Main Street and Greensboro Road carry the downtown traffic. Several of these are state routes. If your driveway work reaches the right-of-way on a state road, NCDOT regulates the connection, and on town streets we check with the Town of Jamestown first.
Historic properties
The Jamestown Historic District and the Oakdale Cotton Mill Village are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you own an older property in or near those areas, we can keep the driveway layout and edges simple and in scale with the house.
Timing your project
Because so many Jamestown driveways were built in the same era, neighbors often notice their driveways failing at about the same time. If a few homes on your street want work done, scheduling them together can cut down on mobilization costs and keeps the street disruption to one or two days. We are happy to look at several driveways in one visit.

Jamestown Questions
My driveway is original to a 1960s house. Can it be saved?
Sometimes with an overlay, if the base is firm. If it has spread-out alligator cracking or sunken spots, replacement usually costs less over time.
Do you work on lots in the historic district?
Yes. We keep layouts and edges simple, and if the property has any review requirements, we work within them.
Who do I call about the driveway apron on a state road?
NCDOT regulates driveway connections to state-maintained roads. We tell you at the estimate if your project reaches that point.
Can neighbors share a paving visit?
Yes. If several Jamestown homes on one street need work, we can look at them in one visit and schedule them together, which can lower mobilization costs.
